From Basiliek van Oostakker-Lourdes, the church is an important pilgrimage site in Oostakker and part of Ghent.
The pilgrimage site was started by a noble woman: the Marquise de Courtebourne-de Nédonchel, who then lived in the neighboring castle of Slotendries. In 1873 she built a cave in her garden in honor of Nossa Senhora de Lourdes. Consecration of the statue in the cave on June 29, 1873, local residents and residents of Ghent asked permission to enter and bid for the cave. A year later, Pieter De Rudder miraculously recovered from a fracture exposed in the Grotto of Lourdes. Because of this healing, there was a great flow of believers. To welcome pilgrims, a church was built in 1875 in neo-Gothic style according to the plans of the architect E. Van Hoecke-Peeters with a slight modification by the architect JB Bethune in 1876. It was consecrated in 1877 and on the 50th anniversary of the pilgrimage site elevated to basilica in 1924. The furniture is also neo-Gothic and designed by JB Bethune.
The basilica is dedicated to Our Lady Immaculate Conception, the name by which Mary made herself known to Bernadette on March 25, 1858.
At the back on the right in the church you will find a photo with some information about Pieter De Rudder and on the left a statue of Bernadette. On the left front of the church is the crowned statue of Mary, Onlekt Received. His statue was crowned on August 5, 1888 by order of Pope Leo XIII.
Above the main altar, an altarpiece represents three caves: the cave of Jesus 'birth in Bethlehem, the cave of Jesus' resurrection and that of Lourdes. One of the stained glass windows above the high hall shows the image of H. Alfonsus de Liguori. A granddaughter of the Marquise De Courtebourne became Immersion Redemptoristin. Very beautiful is the image of the Sacred Heart in the front chapel on the left.
Thanks to the Marquise de Courtebourne, among others, Oostakker-Lourdes has also become the birthplace of an educational campus.
A chime with 49 bells, launched by Bell Foundry Michiels in the 50s of the 20th century, also hangs from a 2-tower van. But the keyboard was temporarily removed during a restoration in the 1970s and has not been put back to date.
